Instagram Introduces Retention Chart & Skip Rate to Boost Reels Performance

Instagram introduces Retention chart and Skip Rate metrics for Reels to help creators analyze audience engagement.

Instagram is stepping up its game for creators by introducing two new performance metrics for Reels – the Retention chart and Skip Rate. These updates are designed to give content creators deeper insights into how their audience interacts with their videos, and most importantly, where viewers lose interest.

What’s New in Instagram Insights?

The highlight of this update is the Retention chart, which tracks how many viewers stick around during each second of a reel. Simply put, it shows the exact moments when people continue watching and when they drop off. While every chart naturally slopes downward as viewers exit, a flatter line means stronger engagement and content that’s holding attention.

Instagram explains: “Retention shows you the moments in your Reel that keep or lose your viewers’ interest, so you can learn from each Reel you share.”

Alongside this, the platform is replacing the “View Rate” metric with “Skip Rate.” Unlike View Rate, which measured how many people watched past the first three seconds, Skip Rate now reveals how many viewers swiped away before even reaching that mark. For creators, this is a much clearer signal of whether your hook is strong enough to grab attention instantly.

Why Does This Matter for Creators?

For anyone posting reels – whether influencers, small businesses, or everyday creators – these metrics are a goldmine. They make it easier to:

  • Identify which parts of a reel are boring or engaging.
  • Craft stronger openings to reduce the Skip Rate.
  • Experiment with storytelling styles that keep viewers watching till the end.
  • Fine-tune content strategies based on real audience behavior, not just likes and shares.

Rolling Out Soon

Instagram has confirmed that these updates will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Earlier this year, the platform also expanded its Insights tab, providing more detailed analytics to help businesses and creators understand how their content performs across the app.

With Reels continuing to dominate Instagram’s ecosystem, these fresh metrics are another push to help creators sharpen their content and keep audiences hooked for longer.

👉 In short: If you’re creating Reels, start paying close attention to Retention and Skip Rate – they’ll tell you more than just views ever could.
